Tooth and jaw injuries can occur when playing contact sport of any kind including hockey, rugby, soccer and boxing. It is advisable to wear a well-fitted mouth guard to protect and minimise these injuries.
Our clinic provides custom designed and fitted sport mouthguards of your choice of colour.
Custom-fitted mouth guards are made from an impression taken of your teeth therefore they offer far more protection and comfort than standard varieties. Standard mouth guards don’t fit as accurately as custom-made mouth guards, they are often uncomfortable and can interfere with an individual’s breathing and speaking ability.
Directly after use your mouth guard should be rinsed in cold water, dried and stored in a plastic container. Do not leave the mouth guard in direct sunlight, in a closed car or in the car’s glove box. Heat can damage it.
Once home rinse your mouth guard in soap and warm water (not hot) after each use. Allowing it to air-dry. Disinfect the mouth guard from time to time with a mouthwash.
Keep the mouth guard in a well-ventilated plastic storage box when not in use. The box should have several holes in it. They should be stored in a cool place avoiding high temperatures.
Replace the mouth guard if it is damaged.
Replace a child’s mouth guard every 12 to 18 months, even if it appears to be in good condition. Growth and new teeth can alter the fit.
Replace an adult’s mouth guard after dental treatment or tooth loss, if it starts to feel uncomfortable or doesn't fit well. Otherwise it should last for many years.
At McGoverns denture clinic we can provide custom-made sports mouth guards. Your health insurance may cover some or all of the cost of your mouthguard - please speak with your provider for more information.
